Why Clothes Smell Worse After Drying

You pull your washing out of the dryer expecting that warm, fresh-laundry smell… and instead you get a damp, musty odour that’s somehow worse than before. Frustrating — and very common.
Here’s what’s actually happening and how to fix it.
1. Bacteria Survives the Wash
That stale smell isn’t just “bad air” — it’s bacteria trapped in fabric fibres. If clothes sit too long before washing, are washed in cold water without proper detergent, or the load is too full, bacteria isn't fully removed. Heat from the dryer then amplifies the odour.
Fix:
Don’t overload the washer (sometimes a second wash before drying if items are particularly soiled)
Use quality detergent
Wash activewear, towels and bedding on appropriate cycles
Avoid leaving wet loads sitting in the machine
Add antibacterial liquid to your wash cycle (place a cap full into the softener compartment of the dispenser)
Excess use of detergents, particularly softener can trap odours as the fibers in the fabric become clogged. Wash through once cycle with vinegar only and the second wash, use your desired detergents sparingly
At The Speedy Bubble Laundromat our detergents are accurately measured and dosed to the optimum quantity and delivered during the correct stage of the wash cycle. We use premium commercial quality detergent and hypoallergenic softener which contains a natural antibacterial solution built in.
2. The Washer Needs Cleaning
Front loaders especially can trap detergent residue, lint and moisture. That creates the perfect environment for mould and odour.
Fix:
Run a hot maintenance wash regularly with vinegar or a specific washing machine solution purchased from the supermarket.
Clean door seals and detergent drawers
Leave the door open to air-dry
3. Damp Laundry Sat Too Long
If washing sits wet — even for a few hours — bacteria multiply fast. Drying it later won’t remove that smell; it sets it in.
Fix:
Dry clothes immediately after washing
If you forget, rewash with detergent before drying
4. The Dryer Isn’t Ventilating Properly
Poor airflow traps moisture, leaving clothes smelling sour instead of fresh.
Fix:
Clean lint filters regularly
Don’t overload dryers - allow room for clothes to 'tumble'
Use commercial dryers for bulky items like doonas
The Easy Option
If you want consistently fresh results without the guesswork, commercial laundromat equipment makes a big difference. Larger machines, proper water extraction and high-efficiency dryers mean clothes dry faster and cleaner.
At The Speedy Bubble Laundromat, our professional machines are designed to handle everyday washing, bulky bedding and heavy loads properly — so your laundry smells the way it should.
